Paris Hurley

Paris Hurley

Composer

Paris Hurley is a composer, performer, and songwriter widely recognized for her genre-spanning sound. A classically trained violinist of 37 years turned post-punk vocalist, her work is raw, defiant, and refined ranging from scores for film and TV, to records, rock shows, and string quartets.

Paris scored The Chronology of Water, written and directed by Kristen Stewart, which premiered at Cannes (2025), and short doc, OUTCRY: Alchemists of Rage (2024). Additionally, she has contributed to scores by Clint Mansell (Love Lies Bleeding, 2024; Playing Nice, 2025) and Anne Nikitin (Little Wing, 2024). Her music as OBJECT AS SUBJECT has appeared in Fast Charlie (2023), The Republic of Sarah (2021), and Are You Afraid of the Dark (2019), and was listed as a favorite on the 2023 Rollo Grady year end list. Paris also scored a 5-hour site-specific dance work by Seattle choreographer, Alice Gosti (2024).

Traversing elements rooted in experimental, minimalist, modern classical, classical ambient, and drone music, to heavier realms influenced by art-rock, dark wave, ethereal wave, gothic rock, and industrial, Paris uses violin and other orchestral instruments, in addition to voice, drums, bass, and electronics, to create rich, visceral soundscapes, both stark and explosive. She is particularly known for her unique rhythmic sense, often writing with breath and voice, then translating these components to other instruments to create sculptural polyrhythmic layers initiated from the body. The expressions are many, yet all hold together as sonic explorations of her subject’s emotional core utilizing her singular sense of texture.

Paris is a versatile and highly sought-after violinist recognized for her impassioned playing and rare ability to move between the technical and improvisational. She spent her childhood studying classical violin with a passion for string quartets and was frequently featured as a soloist, performing concerto repertoire with her local youth symphony. She played Carnegie Hall at age 16. With college, she took a dramatic turn away from her predestined conservatory path and brought her skill as an interpreter into the realm of generative experimentation, recording and performing live with countless contemporary artists including David Byrne, Amanda Palmer, Angel Olsen, Craig Wedren, Soko, Neil Gaiman, Mirah, and Jherek Bischoff. She co-wrote four records and extensively toured Europe with Balkan punk/metal band, Kultur Shock (2008-2016) and was a member of experimental dance/theater group, Degenerate Art Ensemble (2005-2008).

She is the creator of OBJECT AS SUBJECT, a shapeshifting autobiographical entity questioning the edges of obligation and object-hood as a woman. The project is contained only by Paris’ particular web of keening, multidimensional vocals—at times, a music and dance collective thrashing through audiences with gritty, ceremonial, punk-meets-performance-art, at others, a sacred and cinematic world filled with pulsing drums, synths, and lush string arrangements. OBJECT AS SUBJECT has released two albums, PERMISSION (2018) and HERETIC (2023) on Lost Future Records.

Paris lives in Philadelphia with her wife and daughter.
