Meshell Ndegeocello
Composer/Artist/
Songwriter
Mercurial and masterful, MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO has navigated the best and worst of what a career in music has to offer. She eschews genre for originality, celebrity for longevity, and musical trends for musical truths. Having lived through the industry’s boom and bust, she emerges just as she entered – unequivocally herself. Fans have come to expect the unexpected from Meshell, faithfully following her on sojourns into soul, spoken word, R&B, jazz, hip-hop, and rock, all bound by a lyrical and spiritual search for love, justice, respect, resolution, and happiness.
Long assured of her place as an authentic musical thinker, Meshell’s investigation of sound invariably leads not only to new musical experiences but also defies and redefines expectations for women, queer artists, and Black music. Her foray into composing music for visual media offers an exciting new outlet for these journeys, and her rooted yet diverse work in the scoring world is gaining notice and momentum. She’s admired for her fresh approach to the long-running OWN series Queen Sugar. Musically, it’s quite a contrast from her dark, complex work on the popular current STARZ Series Black Mafia Family.
A bass player above all else, Meshell brings her warm, fat, and melodic groove to everything she does. She has been nominated for 12 Grammys, winning in 2021 for Best R&B Song with Robert Glasper and Gabriella Wilson for the song Better Than I Imagined, performed by HER; In 2024, she won for Best Alternative Jazz Album for The Omnichord Real Book, and she is nominated in 2025 in the same category for the brilliant No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin. Meshell has shared the stage with legends such as the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Alanis Morissette, James Blood Ulmer, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Tony Allen, John Medeski, Billy Preston, and Chaka Khan. She credits her bass-playing influences to Sting, Jaco Pastorius, Family Man Barrett, and Stevie Wonder. Notably, Meshell was the first woman to be featured on the cover of Bass Player magazine and remains one of the few women in her world who write the music, sing the songs, and lead the band.
