    Jul 22, 2021

Animal Kingdom (Original Television Score) composed by Alexis Marsh and Samuel Jones, is out now via WaterTower Music.

Alexis and Sam spoke to Eden Arnold from Bleeding Cool about the soundtrack album which contains music from seasons 1-4.

The duo stated that "It’s a lot of fun to translate metaphors and adjectives into music. In developing the sound of the Animal Kingdom score, the producers used words like ‘muscular,’ ‘broken glass,’ ‘jagged,’ and our collective favorite ‘bilious contempt’ – which we still laugh about five years on. Each season we’ve pushed the score into new areas of what those descriptors could sound like by using pedals, modular synths, or extreme digital manipulations to shape the sound of recorded drums, guitar, and bass. The overarching direction has always been to make it unsettling. The essential tension for us is in contrasting how successful the Codys are when they work together with how self-destructive they are when they break off from the family – how they all crave independence at various points, but then make these agonizing choices that only bind them tighter to one another. We have to balance musical elements carefully to avoid sentimentality, convey the seriousness of the situations, but also allow for moments of relief and levity so the pressure doesn’t become overwhelming.”

New episodes of Animal Kingdom’s fifth season will debut on TNT every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET.

Bruce Gilbert and Lauren Mikus are providing music supervision for several exciting projects now and on the horizon!

The duo are signed on to Jenji Kohan’s groundbreaking upcoming Netflix series, Social Distance, the first major series diving into life during the coronavirus pandemic, which is being shot remotely to keep cast and crew safe. Kohan will executive produce, alongside Hilary Weisman Graham, Diego Velasco, Tara Herrmann and Blake McCormick. Bruce and Lauren are also working with Kohan on the Netflix series Teenage Bounty Hunters. Maddie Phillips and Anjelica Bette Fellini star as fraternal twin sisters who “dive into the world of bail skipping baddies while still navigating the high stakes of teenage love and sex”. Creator and co-producer Kathleen Jordan and showrunner Robert Sudduth emphasized to Variety that “we’re not here to judge, we’re here to embrace the nuance. This show is really about two young women who live their lives by their own rules, haters be damned.”

Other new projects include the HBO Max pilot Vegas High, a coming of age drama set in the 1990s, which follows of the story of Laura (Raegan Rozas) who is caught between the fast-paced lifestyle of Las Vegas, and her Mormon faith and community. The pilot is executive produced by writer Sarah-Raquel Jimenez and director Gillian Robespierre, alongside Michael Showalter and Jordana Mollick. Finally, Lauren and Bruce are supervising the TBS series Chad (starring and executive produced by Nasim Pedrad), and the Quibi drama series Swimming with Sharks, which is a contemporary update of George Huang’s 1994 movie which “both celebrates and skewers the Hollywood studio system”. The series stars Kiernan Shipka and Diane Kruger, and tells the story of a young female assistant who is “at the center of a studio filled with manipulators, schemers, and intrigue – little do they know she is poised to outwit them all”.

Murray Gold - Years and Years

    Jun 26, 2019

Years and Years, scored by Murray Gold, had its U.S. premier on HBO this week. The new six part limited drama series was praised by the Hollywood Reporter as a “wildly entertaining, moving and yes, sometimes funny look at a world gone mad”. The show explores three generations of the Lyons family, from 2019 through 2034, and how the impact Trump, populism, Brexit, racism, and technological advancements could have on the trajectory of Britain’s future. Emma Thompson stars as Vivienne Rook, a far right politician who forges ahead on her campaign to make those frightening concepts a reality. Murray uses the entire orchestra, a Bulgarian women’s choir, and a lot more in conveying the unsettling nature of this very possible scenario of the next few decades. Years and Years airs every Monday at 9 pm (PST) on HBO.

Alexis & Sam just wrapped their score to the third season of the hit TNT series Animal Kingdom!

Inspired by the 2010 Australian movie of the same name from David Michôd, Animal Kingdom centers on teen Joshua “J” Cody, who moves in with his freewheeling, criminally inclined relatives in their Southern California beach town after his mother dies of a heroin overdose.

Animal Kingdom has the distinction of being the second highest rated basic cable one-hour series and the highest rated on TNT, no doubt directly attributable to the searing electro-acoustic scoring of this talented duo.

This season has added Denis Leary in a recurring role, joining series regulars Ellen Barkin, who plays the matriarch of the Cody clan, along with Scott Speedman, Shawn Hatosy, Ben Robson, Jake Weary, and Finn Cole.

Animal Kingdom airs Tuesday nights at 9pm/8c, and is also available for streaming at TNTdrama.com

In an interview with New York Post, series co-creator/executive producer Jonathan Krisel explains: “Last season was sort of the awakening of Christine [Andreson] … and this season she bought a business to rescue the family, and I think a lot of families do things like that,” he says. “This season it’s all about how this business [a rodeo] is going to save the family. When money is involved people act crazy and families disintegrate."

    Apr 17, 2020

Roger Neill has two projects debuting in May: Valley Girl and JJ Villard’s Fairy Tales.

Roger scored Orion Classics’ latest film Valley Girl, which releases on digital platforms May 8th. The film, directed by Rachel Lee Goldenberg, is the much anticipated musical adaptation of the 1983 cult classic. Julie (played by both Alicia Silverstone and Jessica Roth), is the “ultimate ‘80s valley girl- that is, until she falls hard for Randy (Josh Whitehouse), a Sunset Strip punk rocker who challenges everything she stands for.” Screenrant stated that “both the original Valley Girl and the remake are twists on Romeo and Juliet, but the remake does have one more trick up its sleeve: It is a Juke Box musical, filled with 80’s hits like We Got The Beat and Take On Me."

Roger also scored JJ Villard’s Fairy Tales, premiering on Adult Swim May 10th. Written and executive produced by J.J. Villard (King Star King), the animated series is a twisted and fun take on classic The Brothers Grimm fairy tales that have been “updated and packaged into a ball of raw, visceral, gross weirdness” where Rapunzel uses her hair for violence, The Seven Dwarfs threaten to kill Snow White with an axe, and Little Red Riding Hood steals a helicopter. The show features a star-studded cast of voice talent including Linda Blair, Warwick Davis, Robert Englund, Cassandra Peterson, Corey Feldman, Maika Monroe, Jennifer Tilly, Finn Wolfhard and many more.

    G.L.O.W. - Bruce Gilbert

    Jul 10, 2018

Bruce Gilbert delivers another stellar soundtrack for Netflix’s second season of G.L.O.W.!

The hit series, centering on crew of misfits who reinvent themselves as the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, is loaded with the finest pop gems of the 80’s including “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now,” “Man on the Corner," “Just Like Honey” – and notably, the amazingly ironic use of “I Know What Boys Like” amidst a familiar backdrop of toxic masculinity.

Bruce spoke to Billboard about his music selection process, balancing a hesitance to place familiar, overused hits with the poignancy that such nostalgia brings. The result is an exciting, artfully curated soundtrack that deftly avoids 80’s cliche.

G.L.O.W. seasons one and two are streaming at Netflix.

Matthew Pusti - The Girlfriend Experience (Season 3)

    May 11, 2021

Matthew Pusti scored season 3 of Steven Soderbergh’s anthology series The Girlfriend Experience, which is now streaming on STARZ.

Written and directed by Anja Marquardt, the new season follows “Iris (Julia Goldani Telles), an American student in London who’s working as a neuroscience researcher at a tech startup by day. By night, she works at a mysterious futuristic escort agency. Soon, she begins using her night job to help inform her day job, becoming fixated on using data to analyze desire”(New York Post). Film Book stated that the “dreamy ambiance of Matthew Pusti’s score and and the purposefully jarring cuts in Nick Carew’s editing” evokes a “prime techno-erotic-thriller- atmosphere” that is “as slick as it is engrossing."

Matthew spoke to Vehlinggo about his score, explaining that “The trick with The Girlfriend Experience, aside from navigating post-production during COVID, was really about identifying with Iris as a character and the change she goes through over the course of the season. From the beginning, we talked a lot about how her theme was about ascent and descent at the same time, and musically I worked from that perspective — something cold and synthesized alongside the warmth of more natural sounds; everything emerging and submerging all at once.”

The Girlfriend Experience Season 3 (Original Series Soundtrack) is now available via Lakeshore Records.

    Fil Eisler - Dietland

    Jun 5, 2018

AMC’s Dietland, scored by Fil Eisler, premieres to critical acclaim!

The dark comedy from Marti Noxon stars Joy Nash as Plum Kettle, a ghostwriter for the editor of one of New York’s hottest fashion magazines. Struggling with self-image and fed up with how she’s treated by her boss and society, Plum sets out on a wildly complicated road to self-awakening.

The New Yorker praises Noxon’s “style of incisive grotesquerie… proportionate to the intensity of its cultural critique and appropriate to a narrative propelled by dream sequences, waking nightmares, and lavish hallucinations.”

USA Today writes “The smartly written dark dramedy, created by Marti Noxon (UnREAL), is a delectable expression of feminist anger, a parable that eviscerates the patriarchy. Dietland isn’t here to make you comfortable.”

The LA Times commends the show on its timeliness: “Sometimes a television comedy’s premise is promising, but the execution is flawed. Sometimes the cast is wonderful, but the direction is bad. Sometimes all the right elements are there, but the timing is wrong. It’s rare when everything comes together as perfectly as it does for the dark comedy Dietland… a wonderfully absurd exaggeration of the rage that’s driving sea change like the #MeToo movement.”

Fil has worked with Noxon previously on UnREAL, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, and To The Bone.

Dietland airs Mondays at 9 PM / 8 Central.
