Murray Gold - Years and Years

    Jun 26, 2019

Years and Years, scored by Murray Gold, had its U.S. premier on HBO this week. The new six part limited drama series was praised by the Hollywood Reporter as a “wildly entertaining, moving and yes, sometimes funny look at a world gone mad”. The show explores three generations of the Lyons family, from 2019 through 2034, and how the impact Trump, populism, Brexit, racism, and technological advancements could have on the trajectory of Britain’s future. Emma Thompson stars as Vivienne Rook, a far right politician who forges ahead on her campaign to make those frightening concepts a reality. Murray uses the entire orchestra, a Bulgarian women’s choir, and a lot more in conveying the unsettling nature of this very possible scenario of the next few decades. Years and Years airs every Monday at 9 pm (PST) on HBO.

Brian Reitzell is the composer of Bandersnatch, the groundbreaking Black Mirror episode directed by David Slade in which the viewing audience controls the story line. The feature-length special is set in 1984, when a young programmer begins to question reality as he works to adapt a fantasy novel into a video game. Netflix’s online platform provides viewers with the ability to explore various scenarios, much like in a video game. Reitzell wrote over 250 individual cues for the episode, along with variations and special stems, in order to get everything to work seamlessly.

The Manchester Guardian raved “The Future of TV is Here” and audiences are having a great time with it. It’s a lot of fun. Check it out.

Inspired by the 2010 Australian movie of the same name from David Michôd, Animal Kingdom centers on teen Joshua “J” Cody, who moves in with his freewheeling, criminally inclined relatives in their Southern California beach town after his mother dies of a heroin overdose.

Animal Kingdom has the distinction of being the second highest rated basic cable one-hour series and the highest rated on TNT, no doubt directly attributable to the searing electro-acoustic scoring of this talented duo.

This season has added Denis Leary in a recurring role, joining series regulars Ellen Barkin, who plays the matriarch of the Cody clan, along with Scott Speedman, Shawn Hatosy, Ben Robson, Jake Weary, and Finn Cole.

Animal Kingdom airs Tuesday nights at 9pm/8c, and is also available for streaming at TNTdrama.com

In an interview with New York Post, series co-creator/executive producer Jonathan Krisel explains: “Last season was sort of the awakening of Christine [Andreson] … and this season she bought a business to rescue the family, and I think a lot of families do things like that,” he says. “This season it’s all about how this business [a rodeo] is going to save the family. When money is involved people act crazy and families disintegrate."

    G.L.O.W. - Bruce Gilbert

    Jul 10, 2018

Bruce Gilbert delivers another stellar soundtrack for Netflix’s second season of G.L.O.W.!

The hit series, centering on crew of misfits who reinvent themselves as the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, is loaded with the finest pop gems of the 80’s including “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now,” “Man on the Corner," “Just Like Honey” – and notably, the amazingly ironic use of “I Know What Boys Like” amidst a familiar backdrop of toxic masculinity.

Bruce spoke to Billboard about his music selection process, balancing a hesitance to place familiar, overused hits with the poignancy that such nostalgia brings. The result is an exciting, artfully curated soundtrack that deftly avoids 80’s cliche.

G.L.O.W. seasons one and two are streaming at Netflix.

    Fil Eisler - Dietland

    Jun 5, 2018

AMC’s Dietland, scored by Fil Eisler, premieres to critical acclaim!

The dark comedy from Marti Noxon stars Joy Nash as Plum Kettle, a ghostwriter for the editor of one of New York’s hottest fashion magazines. Struggling with self-image and fed up with how she’s treated by her boss and society, Plum sets out on a wildly complicated road to self-awakening.

The New Yorker praises Noxon’s “style of incisive grotesquerie… proportionate to the intensity of its cultural critique and appropriate to a narrative propelled by dream sequences, waking nightmares, and lavish hallucinations.”

USA Today writes “The smartly written dark dramedy, created by Marti Noxon (UnREAL), is a delectable expression of feminist anger, a parable that eviscerates the patriarchy. Dietland isn’t here to make you comfortable.”

The LA Times commends the show on its timeliness: “Sometimes a television comedy’s premise is promising, but the execution is flawed. Sometimes the cast is wonderful, but the direction is bad. Sometimes all the right elements are there, but the timing is wrong. It’s rare when everything comes together as perfectly as it does for the dark comedy Dietland… a wonderfully absurd exaggeration of the rage that’s driving sea change like the #MeToo movement.”

Fil has worked with Noxon previously on UnREAL, Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, and To The Bone.

Dietland airs Mondays at 9 PM / 8 Central.
