    Mar 27, 2020

Christine Greene Roe (For All Mankind, Shrill) was the music supervisor for the excellent soundtrack to Eliza Hittman’s latest film Never Rarely Sometimes Always. The New York Times praises the film as a “lowkey knockout” which tells a “seldom-told story about abortion”, and does so “without cant, speeches, inflamed emotions and – most powerfully – without apology.” Rolling Stone Magazine calls the film “urgent” and “impossible to forget”, as it dives in to the “eloquent but unspoken bond of two teen girls who are nurturing their own healing process while trying to navigate a world of toxic masculinity, cold indifference, and a political system working against their right to choose.” The film won the Silver Berlin Bear Grand Jury Prize at the 2020 Berlin International Film Festival, and well as the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award: Neorealism at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

Never Rarely Sometimes Always will be available at home on-demand for a 48-hour viewing period starting Friday, April 3.

    Matt Novack - Medical Police

    Jan 8, 2020

Matt Novack scored the twisted comedy series Medical Police, which premiers on Netflix this Friday, January 10th. From the team behind Childrens Hospital, Medical Police follows two American physicians (Erinn Hayes and Rob Huebel) working at a pediatric hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil who accidentally discover a virus which has the power to wipe out all of civilization. They’re soon recruited as secret government agents and find themselves in a race against time to find a cure, all the while uncovering a chilling conspiracy at the center of the outbreak.

Matt spoke to Flickering Myth about his experience composing both Childrens Hospital and Medical Police. “I’ve worked with these creators for years starting with the very first episode of Childrens Hospital, so of course I jumped at the chance to continue the story.” Matt describes his score for Medical police as “ modern globe-trotting action/adventure, with a hint of mystery and spy tones.” He stated that his overall goal for the series was to “play it as straight and serious as possible to make a unique score that would fit in a non-comedy show or film of the same” while still “taking it a little over-the-top at points with occasional fun, quirky comedy cues.”

    Nov 21, 2019

Graham Reynolds ’s new album Marfa: A Country & Western Big Band Suite , is being released as part of his multimedia trilogy titled The Marfa Triptych: Three Portraits of West Texas. Billboard raves that the lead track “The Uninhabited”, which premiered exclusively on their site, “evokes the openness of the West Texas terrain and the composer’s experience with it”. Graham further elaborates on this notion, stating that this album is “designed to capture the unique ambiance of the Chihuahuan desert landscape as well as the uniqueness of the population on the Texas-Mexico border.”
Graham recorded the thirteen track album with a group of fourteen musicians, including legendary guitarist Redd Volkaert and pedal steel player Ricky Davis, at his studio in Austin. The Austin Chronicle took a deep dive into the record, describing its sound as “guitar strings soaking in tin bathtubs of studio reverb as clusters of ocotillo violins crook toward endless twilight."

Marfa: A Country & Western Big Band Suite will be available on November 22.

    Tim Kvasnosky - J.T. Leroy

    May 29, 2019

J.T. Leroy, scored by Tim Kvasnosky, is now playing in selected art house theaters and streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The film tells the extraordinary story of Laura Alpert and Savannah Knoops’ outlandish literary hoax. Kristen Stewart stars as Savannah, who spent six years posing as the acclaimed author J.T. Leroy, a fictitious character developed by Laura to hide her identity as the real author. As a young, mysterious, queer writer with a tragic past, J.T. fascinates the public while gaining access to Hollywood’s innermost circles, as Laura (played by Laura Dern) goes along for the ride as his British manager Speedie. Kvasnosky (known in electronic music circles as Tim K) stretches out of character here with a score dominated by lilting alto flutes, perfectly capturing the whimsy as well as the pathos of the story.
